Biography

Multidisciplinary Contemporary Artist | Miami, Florida

Daniela Sanchez Vegas is a Venezuelan-born, Miami-based contemporary multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, mixed media, large-scale murals, and site-specific installations. With nearly two decades of artistic exploration, she has developed a distinctive visual language that brings together expressive color, organic and geometric forms, material experimentation, and a profound investigation of humanity's relationship with the natural world.

Working across the boundaries of traditional and contemporary disciplines, Sanchez Vegas explores themes of identity, transformation, resilience, ecological consciousness, and collective belonging. Her work moves between abstraction and figuration, often incorporating layered surfaces, unconventional materials, and sculptural elements that challenge the distinction between artwork, object, and environment.

Her commitment to creative experimentation emerged during her years in Costa Rica (2007–2016), where she founded Re-Inventando Muebles Ecológicos, an initiative dedicated to transforming discarded materials into functional art and design. This early exploration of material reinvention established a lasting foundation for her practice, where sustainability extends beyond environmental responsibility to become a metaphor for memory, renewal, and the continuous transformation of matter.

Her multidisciplinary approach is informed by academic studies in Social Communication at Universidad Santa María in Caracas and Graphic Design at Universidad U-Creativa in San José, alongside independent artistic development and hands-on experience working with established artists in New York. These experiences contributed to a practice that combines conceptual investigation, technical versatility, and the capacity to realize ambitious works across diverse scales and environments.

Throughout her career, Sanchez Vegas has developed and exhibited work internationally, with artistic projects and commissions spanning the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe. Her public art portfolio includes monumental murals, sculptural interventions, hand-painted swimming pool environments, and architectural installations. Among her notable projects are a large-scale public sculpture developed for Maurice A. Ferré Park in collaboration with the City of Miami; Thinking About Life (2024), a monumental 350-foot mural in Hallandale Beach, Florida; public art commissions in Miami Beach; and Pathways of Progress (2026), a sculptural wall installation created for a public transportation facility in Ocala, Florida.

As a resident artist at Miami International Fine Arts (MIFA), Sanchez Vegas has continued to expand her studio practice toward increasingly experimental and conceptually driven work. Her 2026 solo exhibition, Nature Within, curated by Shirley Moreira at MIFA Gallery, marked a significant evolution in her artistic trajectory. Bringing together painting, sculpture, and installation, the exhibition examined the relationship between human identity, material memory, ecological transformation, and the inseparable connection between the body and the natural environment.

Works such as Defragmentation of the Origin, Extracted Remains, Reassembled Origins, and Holding Myself reflect this expanding investigation, incorporating concrete, cement, resin, wood, and reclaimed materials as both physical substances and carriers of meaning. Through fragmentation, accumulation, and reconstruction, these works consider transformation not as the erasure of the past, but as a process in which histories remain embedded within matter.

Her artistic development has also been recognized through the Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Emergency Grant, selection for the Château d'Orquevaux international artist residency in France with a Denis Diderot Grant, and inclusion in the City of Ocala's Public Artist Roster.

Today, Sanchez Vegas maintains an active practice that moves between intimate studio investigations and large-scale public interventions. Whether developing a sculptural installation, an experimental painting, or a monumental work integrated into architecture, she approaches art as a living dialogue between material, environment, and human experience.

Guided by her philosophy, “Artistic Freedom — Create with No Boundaries,” her work seeks to challenge conventional divisions between artistic disciplines while creating meaningful experiences that encourage reflection, connection, and new ways of understanding our place within the world.

Artist Statement

My artistic practice begins with a belief in freedom: the freedom to explore, to transform, and to create beyond the limitations of materials, disciplines, or conventional forms.

I work across painting, sculpture, mixed media, and installation, allowing each concept to determine its own material language. I am interested in what happens when boundaries dissolve—between the human body and the landscape, between organic and industrial matter, between what is discarded and what is considered valuable, and between destruction and regeneration.

Nature has always been central to my work, but my relationship with it has evolved. What began as an exploration of color, organic forms, and ecological awareness has developed into a deeper investigation of our origins, identity, and the physical and emotional traces we carry within ourselves.

I see matter as a living archive. Concrete, wood, resin, pigments, and recovered materials hold histories of extraction, transformation, use, and abandonment. Through processes of layering, fragmentation, reconstruction, and material experimentation, I explore how these histories become part of new forms. I am particularly interested in the tension between fragility and permanence, and in the possibility that what has been fractured can become the foundation for something entirely different.

Color remains an essential part of my visual language. Sometimes it is expressive, vibrant, and expansive; at other times, restrained, allowing texture, form, and materiality to communicate what color cannot. This contrast reflects my interest in the coexistence of beauty and imperfection, order and chaos, vulnerability and strength.

My work also moves beyond the traditional exhibition space. Through public art and architectural interventions, I investigate how artistic expression can reshape collective environments, generate a sense of belonging, and encourage new relationships between people and the places they inhabit.

I do not believe art must exist within a single medium or definition. For me, artistic freedom is not simply the ability to work without boundaries; it is the willingness to question them, dismantle them, and continually discover new possibilities of expression.

Ultimately, my practice is an ongoing exploration of transformation—of materials, environments, and ourselves.

“I did not return to nature. I remembered that I had never left it.”
